Homewood Mountain Resort on the shores of Lake Tahoe has completed its about face on an attempt to go private and issued the following statement apologizing for their lack of transparency in the process.

Unfortunately Homewood will not be operating this season after a financial backer withdrew its support. When they are able to reopen, Homewood plans to “provide a great skier experience available for locals and visitors alike as stated in the 2011 approved Homewood Mountain Resort Master Plan. There are no proposed changes to public access from the approved Master Plan.”

Here is Homewood’s statement on their commitment to never going private:

Here it is loud and clear: HOMEWOOD WILL ALWAYS BE PUBLIC.

As much as we all love the old-school vibe that has defined Homewood for decades, it’s time for improvements. It’s no secret that a rapidly shifting snow sports industry has created a challenging environment for smaller ski resorts, and we’ve certainly felt the pinch here at Homewood.

With the need for major capital investment to complete much-needed upgrades to infrastructure, we explored different options for Homewood’s future, including a private resort model.

It quickly became clear that not only is a private model not aligned with the approved master plan, it’s also not what’s best for the community or the mountain. And as we’ve worked with various agencies on our master plan, we’ve failed to keep you – our friends and neighbors – clearly informed on our plans.

We’re sorry we let you down, and we are grateful for the chance to create better transparency and clear up any misinformation.

Moving forward, we are committed to open, honest and respectful communication, and we hope to be skiing with you next winter and beyond.
