A 20 mile potion of Blue Ridge Parkway reopened this morning, marking the the first section of the road to open in North Carolina since Hurricane Helene. The section, ranging milepost 285.5 at Bamboo Gap to milepost 305 near Beacon Heights, is in the Blowing Rock, North Carolina area.
“We realize how critical the Parkway is for our region. While much work remains, we are prioritizing our efforts in less-damaged areas that have the most impact for community connectivity, and that we are able to reopen safely. We are anticipating opening additional sections of the Parkway that support adjoining communities, soon.” – Blue Ridge Parkway Superintendent Tracy Swartout.
Because Blue Ridge Parkway is a narrow, two-lane road with shifting grades and sharp curves, and features no truck lanes or runaway truck ramps, commercial vehicles are prohibited. Violators will receive a citation and up to a $5,000 fine.
“Park visitors are also urged to use extra caution when visiting the parkway areas that are open. Visitors should anticipate closed facilities and trails in this approximately 20-mile section of the park and follow directions on local signage regarding facility or trail closures.“
Bass Lake at milepost 294, Moses Cone Manor House parking and the carriage trails in and around milepost 294, Price Lake Picnic Area at milepost 296.4 and other trails between milepost 285.5 and 305 are all now open. The Moses Cone Manor House interior and Carriage Barn restrooms, Boone Fork Trail, and Prince Park Campground remain closed.
Many trial assessments have not been completed, so visitors should proceed with extreme caution when hiking. Landslides, tree debris, and washed-out sections or bridges are all possible hazards along the trails. Guests should continue to respect all closures throughout the area.
