If you haven’t herd, twice a year there’s a sheep takeover of Tamarack Ski Resort in Idaho as area sheep herders move their flocks through the area. Its quite a spectacle to see in person and the folks at the resort sent up a drone to capture the action:
“The only traffic jam in Donnelly that’s worth every minute. Twice a year, we happily watch the sheep parade through the resort.”
It should be noted that sheep have been moving along this corridor long before the resort was established and anyone who might find themselves in the midst of the biannual sheep drive should follow proper etiquette:
Livestock Etiquette
-The sheep are typically protected by Great Pyrenees or other working sheep dogs. They are not pets, they take their job seriously!
-Mountain bikers should dismount from their bikes.
-Walk your bike through the sheep and then continue on your ride.
-Keep your pets on a leash.
-If the working dogs approach you, talk to them and let them know you are a human and not a threat.
-Approach cattle very slowly and give them time to move off the trail.
-If a cow runs down the trail in front of you, stop and wait, and let the animal move off the trail.
-If you see anyone harassing cattle, wildlife or wild horses, please notify the BLM or the Forest Service.
Here is a video from this summer of the sheep passing through:
