MAINE – It certainly looks and feels a lot like fall in New England right now, with highs in the 50°s and low 60°s throughout much of Maine. Of course with the weather getting colder and the leaves starting to fall one question must be asked: when does ski season start on the East Coast?
A single day answer might not be available yet, but Maine’s Sunday River Resort began testing their snow guns this morning, so at least we know it’s coming!
Sunday River opened up last year on November 14, with Lollapalooza and Rogue Angel, accessed by Jordan 8, open from top-to-bottom. A set opening day for the 2024/25 ski season has not yet been announced, but the Maine ski area usually shoots for late-October or early-November.
Again, Sunday River has only stated that this is just a test of the snowmaking guns, their current snowmaking timeline has not been announced. Ideal snowmaking temperatures may differ resort to resort, but typically the wet-bulb temperature needs to be below 28°F. Wet-bulb takes into account both the air temperature and the humidity in the air. Lower humidity means lower wet-bulb, with the wet-bulb temperature dropping a degree for every 10% below 100% humidity. So if the air temperature in 30°F and the humidity is 70%, the wet-bulb temperature is around 27°.
