ARAPAHOE BASIN, Colorado – It’s been a warm fall here in Colorado. A few light snowfalls have reached the tops of the highest peaks, but otherwise it’s continued to feel like ski season is still far off. Fortunately Arapahoe Basin shared some good news this morning: snowmaking is officially underway.

Sustainability in snowmaking at Arapahoe Basin

Snow guns were fired up and down High Noon, the ski area’s first trail to open every season, last night and into this morning. Prime snowmaking conditions at Arapahoe Basin sit around 26°F wet bulb (wet bulb accounts for both temperature and humidity).

Temperatures in Summit County, like most of Colorado, have still been fairly warm, but the snowmakers are jumping on every opportunity they get. The first layer of snowmaking is focused on keeping the ground cool and wet, so future layers will have an easier time sticking around.

Arapahoe Basin is set to open as soon as Mother Nature allows. Last year that was on October 29. We’ll see when opening day takes place this year, but we’re certainly hoping for a late October date! Keep Ullr in your mind!
