Big Sky, Montana – The newest luxury development was nearly destroyed by fire.
Last week, the Big Sky Fire Department was called to the One&Only Moonlight Basin. The incident resulted in the response of more than 20 fire units and over 40 personnel.
The fire started on the third floor of one of the future units in the west building and eventually spread to another unit. Because the building was still being constructed, the fire suppression systems didn’t go off. The Big Sky Fire Department (BSFD) was dispatched at 6:37 p.m. to fight the flames and arrived only a few minutes after the fire was reported.

The BSFD charged up to the third floor, going through poor visibility from the heavy smoke to take on the flames. They had the fire under control at 7:51 p.m. A drone with thermal imaging technology flown by the firefighters determined that the roof had been compromised, so the crews then went on to limit the spread of that portion of the fire. Thanks to the firefighter’s help, the facility and hundreds of jobs were saved.
However, that doesn’t mean the building didn’t make it out unscathed. The two units that were engulfed by the fire are considered to be a total loss. During the flames, the building also saw heavy smoke throughout it. Water damage was also reported on the first and second floors.
The One&Only Moonlight Basin resort will feature 72 guest rooms and suites, 18 cabins, private residences and lots, dining options, and numerous amenities. For guests, there will be a lodge and a gondola that accesses Big Sky, which is free to access for people skiing at the Montana ski resort. The ski lodge and gondola will open during the 2024-25 season. The whole resort was scheduled for June 2025, but it’s uncertain whether this fire will delay that.
