The waters off Praia do Norte in Nazaré, Portugal produce some of the biggest waves on the planet where heights can exceed 98 feet. When Atlantic swells meet the Nazaré North Canyon, one of the largest underwater canyons in the world, waves equivalent to ten-story building are generated and only a select few surfers on the planet attempt to ride them.
One of these brave surfers is Kai Lenny who understands you have “pay to play” when trying to tame one of the most dangerous breaks in the world. Through years of training Kai has learned to remain calm while waiting for a jet ski rescue after wiping out at Nazaré and documented the process with a handheld GoPro.
If you are interested in surfing at Nazaré but have no intention of getting the water, you can post up at the São Miguel Arcanjo Fort, which has a lighthouse and a surfing museum.
