Belmar beach peaceful protest.
Belmar beach peaceful protest.

More news out of Belmar, New Jersey where a man snuck past a “beach badge” checker and sat in the lotus position at the high tide line in protest against the recent arrest of a surfer.

The man was instructed to leave and enter the beach legally and he complied but returned to his original position and was taken away by police. The man didn’t resist arrest but also didn’t really help the police in removing himself. The man simply went catatonic requiring a stretcher to get him off the beach.

The peaceful protest stems from an August 20th arrest of a Belmar Beach surfer that made national news. While public outcry is based on Belmar’s $12 beach badge policy, local police have stated 28-year-old surfer Liam Mahoney “was not arrested for not having a beach badge” rather he was charged disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and obstruction of justice. The have released body cam footage of the arrest and made a lengthly statement you can read HERE.
