Jasper, Alberta — One of the most notable Canadian wildfires this summer destroyed parts of Jasper. Wildfires happened throughout Canada this summer, but perhaps the most notable one swept through Jasper, a popular tourist town in Alberta. The destruction led to 358 structures being lost from the wildfire. One positive from this situation for skiers was that Marmot Basin was left unscathed. However, many people didn’t know how close Marmot Basin was to disaster.
Yesterday, Banff Sunshine Village shared an aerial photo taken by Andrea MacDonald of the damage caused by the Jasper Wildfire. The jarring image shows the charred land, aka the area reached by the wildfire, being very close to Marmot Basin. According to Castanet, the wildfire path was within 400 meters of Marmot Basin (around 1300 feet or .25 miles) The ultimate takeaway was that the wildfire was so close to destroying Marmot Basin. However, considering the circumstances, the trails and infrastructure look like they’re in great shape.
