Carrabassett Valley, Maine- A new era has officially begun at Sugarloaf Mountain.

Today, Sugarloaf opened the West Mountain expansion. The opening began at 9:30 am, with a rope drop of the new terrain. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony occurred at 10 a.m. on the Bucksaw Express chairlift.

The chairlift, originally situated at Big Sky Resort, was modernized before installation at the Maine ski resort. The chairlift has a vertical rise of 1,433 vertical feet, carries 2400 uphill guests per hour, and has a ride time of just under seven minutes.

The expansion includes twelve new beginner and intermediate trails which collectively total 120 skiable acres. The nine runs that are part of this grand opening include Bucksaw, Feller Buncher, Hatchet, Horseshoe, Chipper, Beaver Tail, Whistle Punk, Knot Bumper, and West Mtn Crosscut.

Over the coming years, Sugarloaf will continue growing out West Mountain, which will include multiple real estate developments.

On February 20th, Sugarloaf will be hosting a West Mountain Party and Celebration at the famous Widowmaker bar. As part of the event, they’ll be premiering a “This is West Mountain” short film, which documents how this expansion came to be.
