LA VERNE, California – A 93-pound giant schnauzer named Holly Jolly managed to survive an attack from what appeared to be a young mountain lion in Los Angeles County earlier this week.

Steve and Nicole, Holly Jolly’s owners, were inside watching television when the attack began. When they first heard the dog’s yelps, they weren’t sure if it was from the tv or from outside, but realizing fairly quickly that the noises were, in fact, coming from their backyard. They spoke to KLTA 5 about the incident.

As soon as I heard how fierce the battle was, I was like there’s no way. I was imagining like a skunk or something back here that she was just messing with, so then I went in and grabbed a gun.” – Steve

By the time Steve had returned with his gun, the big cat had left, leaving the dog with multiple puncture wounds and scratches. The animal did return about 20 minutes later, likely searching for the schnauzer.

Holly Jolly was treated for the injuries, including receiving required stitches, and is now doing fine. Steve explained that he intends to accompany the dog in the backyard at night from here on out.
