“Beyond stoked to get my first ski turns of the winter season at Nazarè, Portugal. Definitely the craziest most challenging bumpy conditions you could ask for, but having a solid watermen like White Water Willy sling me into a couple liquid mountains and make it out safely, made it all come together.”
Chuck Patterson had been hinting he’d been up to something in Portugal and now we know what it is. Chuck pioneered the sports of extreme wave skiing when he took on the legendary break Pe’ahi (AKA Jaws) in Hawaii. Now he has taken his talents across the pond to shred the biggest waves in the world at Nazarè. This is just a taste of the action “more to come very soon”:
“Heaviest first turns of the season at Nazarè, Portugal couldn’t have gone better. I’ve always been curious to feel the power and energy of this majestic place even on this smaller swell, the rides were super sketchy with no room for error. Having the best driver and a solid safety plan made all the difference. More to come very soon.”

ABOUT NAZARE:
Nazaré, Portugal, is renowned for its awe-inspiring waves that have captured the attention of surfers and ocean enthusiasts worldwide. Nestled along the Atlantic coastline, this picturesque fishing village transforms into a surfing mecca when winter storms generate colossal swells that crash against the underwater Nazaré Canyon. These waves can reach extraordinary heights, with some towering over 100 feet.
The phenomenon of Nazaré’s massive waves gained global recognition in recent years, attracting elite big wave surfers seeking the ultimate challenge. The Praia do Norte beach, in particular, is where the most formidable waves break, creating an adrenaline-fueled spectacle that draws crowds of onlookers and surf aficionados.
The unique bathymetry of Nazaré’s seabed plays a crucial role in wave formation, as the underwater canyon channels and amplifies the incoming swells, giving rise to the gargantuan waves that have become synonymous with this coastal gem. Surfers, armed with specialized equipment and skills, navigate these colossal walls of water, pushing the boundaries of what is considered possible in the realm of big wave surfing.
Nazaré’s waves have not only become a showcase for extreme water sports but also a testament to the raw power and beauty of the ocean, making it a must-visit destination for those captivated by nature’s breathtaking displays.
