Probably the most geographically unique ski area in the United States is Cloudmont Ski & Golf. Located in (check notes… wait seriously?) Alabama, Cloudmont is the only ski resort in the deep south. With this latitude comes a fair share of operational challenges, resulting in rare openings.
While they were able to open for a couple of days during the 2022-23 season, the skiing operations were short-lived. This ski season has seen warm weather and a lack of communications from Cloudmont, making longtime guests anxious about its future. This week, Cloudmont finally announced that they were not going to open this winter due to the need to attend to a family illness.
The past couple of years have seen a lack of operational days. Social media updates are few and far between, and the website still claims that they’re closed due to Covid-19 restrictions. The situation even resulted in one comment that you don’t typically see on social media:
“I think selling this place to Vail would be the most logical thing to do at this point.”
Who knows what the future holds for this place, but if it has any chance, they need to significantly upgrade their snowmaking system. Complacency in the ski industry is a recipe for failure. Selling to new ownership should be an idea to consider.
With winters becoming more abnormal, we’ll see if people can still Ski Bama in the future.
