It’s been a Bittersweet Symphony so far this winter for Bittersweet Resort. Like most of the Midwest’s ski industry, warm weather led to a slow start to their season. Snowfall over the weekend should’ve meant the season would kick into high hear, but people are now talking about a bizarre chairlift accident.

Reddit user EatingADamnSalad shared two photos of one of the chairs falling off from the Snow Flyer High-Speed chairlift. No one was on the chair when it fell, and it didn’t hit any guests when it dropped to the ground. The twelve people on the chairlift were evacuated by ski patrol.

The cause of the accident was a freak gust of wind, pushing that one chair into the communication line, leading to the grip and the chair falling off. Nick Ross, who’s the General Manager of Bittersweet Resort, explained his shock about the situation to News Channel 3:

“This was something I’ve never seen in 18 years. It was a freak accident.”

The chairlift will undergo repairs and safety checks over the next few days and is expected to reopen soon.
