Like many ski resorts across North America, Sun Valley Resort in Idaho has struggled so far this winter. With a drier climate than other Western destinations, Sun Valley has had to rely on its snowmaking to open its terrain. The result has been photos from people like Redditor BongRipsForBoognish (not a typo, that’s their actual username), which reminds me a lot of many of my days skiing in New England recently.
While Sun Valley has received some snow since that’s that depressing photo, they dealt with another problem on the Lower River Run trail.
Yesterday, Redditor Tangsta1 shared a stream going through the snow of the River Run trail. This resulted in some of the snow turning into mud. People in the comments believe this likely was from a busted snowmaking water pipe.
These drought-like conditions are a major bummer, as Sun Valley is an iconic resort. They opened up two world-class chairlifts last month, and have another new chairlift coming next winter. According to Open Snow, Sun Valley could see 16″ of snow over the next ten days, so we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for them.
