Did you know that you could ski in Rhode Island? The smallest state in the U.S. is home to one ski area: Yawgoo Valley.
First opened during the 1965-66 season, it has become the convenient shredding spot for those who live in the Providence area. There were four other ski areas in Rhode Island, but Yawgoo is the only one still standing.
Yawgoo opened for the season on December 23rd, but its open terrain is limited. Today, Yawgoo will be open today from 10 am-3 pm but plans to close after that due to the incoming warm weather. They are aiming to reopen in the relatively near future. Lift tickets today are $20, and rentals are $20. The only lift open is their rope tow, which services the Novice Area trail. Weather will remain too warm to make snow until at least early next week.
Like most of North America this ski season, warm weather in Rhode Island has only allowed for limited snowmaking windows. It shows the need to continuously invest in snowmaking equipment, and some ski areas in Southern New England may need to start considering the all-weather snowmaking systems that Powder Ridge and Ski Ward installed before this ski season.
