Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) has a stern reminder to leave no trace. Staff responded to an incident of a bat tangled in a fishing line. The bat was seen alive hanging from a tree but unfortunately passed away due to its injuries. Here is the social media statement from RMNP regarding the incident:

“Park staff recently responded to a bat dangling from a tree at Dream Lake. It was caught on a fishing lure attached to fishing line that had been caught in a tree and left behind. This bat was still alive when rangers responded, but later died as a result of being caught on the fishing lure. Abandoned fishing line and hooks can be deadly to bats, birds and other wildlife. This bat was entangled in a barbed hook, which is prohibited in catch-and-release waters inside RMNP. In waters like Dream Lake, only barbless hooks are allowed.”

RMNP continued with a reminder that it is the responsibility of visitors to keep wildlife safe:

“We can all do our part and leave no trace of our activities when recreating in the park. Does it take extra effort sometimes, sure. Is it worth it? Yes! Take a few minutes when you are out on the trails or enjoying the view of an alpine lake. If you see things like fishing line, hooks, or trash left behind (even if you didn’t leave it), – please pay it forward and pack it out. And for those who already do this – you’re the best!”

RMNP concluded its statement with some facts that highlight the importance of bats:

“Need a reminder of how incredible bats are? They prey on insects, like mosquitos and crop pests. For example, Little brown bats have been known to catch and eat over 150 mosquitos in 15 minutes. Bats also pollinate plants and help disperse seeds. Bats in Rocky have been found to inhabit areas with elevations ranging from 7,600 ft to 11,350 ft. There are nine known species of bats in the park!”
