A couple of years ago, one of the biggest stories in the ski industry was a planned indoor ski resort in Northern Virginia.

Alpine-X, aimed to build a massive ski & snowboarding complex on top of a landfill. The facility could include ski slopes, a hotel, a mountain coaster, a gondola, and a waterpark. The ultimate goal of Alpine-X is to make skiing more affordable and accessible to people in metropolitan areas. After they announced last year that they were planning to build at least two resorts in Texas, the news about these developments has been minimal.

This week, a disappointing update was revealed from FFXnow.com. Alpine-X hoped to file plans with the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors in Virginia to lease the landfill by the end of 2022, but they moved back these plans due to changes in the financial market. Alpine-X is aiming to figure out the timing for the project within the next three months. The negotiation period between Alpine-X and the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will last until the end of this year.

A spokesperson for Alpine-X said the following to FFXnow:

“The current markets/inflationary construction costs have impacted our timeline. However, our goal is to transition to rapid development as soon as these factors improve.”

This is a bummer, as I definitely want to see more indoor ski resorts in the United States. I’ve been genuinely rooting for this project for a while now, so hopefully, they can figure it out, whether it be in Virginia or Texas.
