German documentarian Andreas Kieling was brutally attacked by a bear last week while filming rare birds in the Carpathian Mountains of Central Europe. The man, who is okay after the incident, pointed out on Facebook that the bear was just following its instincts when in attacked.

Kieling detailed the attack in German in a video posted to his Facebook. According to the New York Post, the filmmaker explained that the bear had unexpectedly lunged out of the bushes, damaging his left arm to a point where surgeons had to remove small pieces of bone.

“My instincts helped me to put up the [camera] tripod as some kind of protective shield. Then I rammed it into the bear’s mouth…I just tried to protect my neck and my head.” – Andreas Kieling

The documentarian wants to highlight that the bear was simply acting on instinct. He pointed out a few possible reasons for the attack, including the fact that it is currently mating season, meaning male hormones are buzzing for the bears, and that the bear could have been protecting a deer carcass or some other prey.
