High winds and cold temperatures that lead to the closure of Steamboat Ski Resort on February 15 have reportedly caused further closures on the mountain. According to the Steamboat Pilot, burst water pipes have forced the closure of both Thunderhead Lodge and the Steamboat Gondola as of 10am February 16.

As the extreme cold lifted and frozen pipes began to thaw within Thunderhead Lodge, leaks became evident. Steamboat officials, along with health and fire officials, determined that the leaks pose a risk of damaging the building’s fire suppression system, leading to the closure of both the building and the gondola that runs through its lower level.

At this point in the season, 100% of Steamboat‘s trails are open to skiers and snowboarders, and every lift, aside from the Steamboat Gondola, is open as of 11:30am February 16. Crews are working to fix the leaks and reopen the lift and lodge as soon as possible.
