“The cars were parked illegally. They were over that white line, and there wasn’t enough room for the bus to get by and not enough room for him to move into the oncoming lane and veer over there because there’s just so much traffic up there on a weekend.” UTA Spokesman, Carl Arky

The Utah Transit Authority wants to get the word out about proper parking procedures in Big Cottonwood following after a ski bus crash with an illegally parked over the weekend.

KSL reports the incident happened Saturday morning on the S-curve in Big Cottonwood Canyon. The car was parked over the white line and was sticking out into the road. Thankfully no passengers were injured but it was frustrating for folks heading up for a day on the slopes who were delayed 90 minutes for the cops to come and investigate.

Elsie Johsnon was a passenger on the bus at the time of the crash:

“It was loud. It was just really loud and plastic and glass breaking and scraping for a good couple seconds. The car was parked on the curve in a very dangerous spot, first of all and then they were also over the line.”

The bus is still operational but will need bodywork. The driver of the illegally parked car and their insurance company will be responsible damages. Arky wants to use the incident as a reminder for drivers parking along the road:

“Our concern is we have enough room for our buses to get by. Everybody wants to get up to the ski resorts and hit the slopes, so we’re asking everybody, please park legally.”
