Smugglers Notch/Route 108 closed for winter

The closing of the tricky pass on Scenic VT 108 through Smugglers’ Notch, VT is another unofficial start to the winter, in my book.

The notch road closes annually from November-May as it would be extremely difficult to keep open throughout the cold and snowy Vermont winter.

The notch road connects Smugglers’ Notch Resort with Stowe during the Spring, Summer, and Fall.

Here’s the full statement from the VT Agency of Transportation:

“Scenic VT 108 “Smugglers Notch” is now CLOSED for the 2022-2023 winter season. Crews are closing the gates on either side of the mountain and Digital Message Signs are illuminated indicating the closure is in place.”

It’s fitting that the road closed the same day that Smuggs is getting hit with an early-season storm. The resort just posted a video to their Instagram story showing fat and fluffy flakes falling on the mountain.

Here’s hoping for a long and snowy season ahead for my good friends at Smuggs. The notch road is closed. It’s time to go skiing!
