If you’re looking for a chill way to spend your day, you can’t go wrong watching some Beluga Whales roaming around Hudson Bay. Last Friday, Explore.org launched two webcams that show the beluga whales traveling through the Hudson Bay of Canada to the warmer waters of the Churchill River. During the summertime, the ice melts in the body of salt water, leading to between 57,000-60,000 beluga whales traveling through the bay. Their main objective is to use these shallow waters and remaining sea ice to avoid orca whales. In addition, they use their time there to eat, molt, and give birth to their young.
The cams, which come from the Beluga Boat, show live shots from 1 to 5 p.m. EST today but they show the daily highlights through the rest of the day and night. The feeds are a part of the celebration for Arctic Sea Ice Day that occurred on July 15th, a pivotal day that brings attention to the melting Arctic ice ecosystem.
