Two Arizona teenagers were awarded the Carnegie Medal this month after entering dangerous waters to rescue two young girls, one aged 18 and one aged 11. At the time of the incident in July 2020, Zachary Haugen was 16 and Jake Watson was 15. They were on vacation in San Diego, California, when Zach, a trained lifeguard, spotted the two girls struggling along a rocky cliff at Sunset Cliffs, and immediately jumped into the water to rescue them. Jake followed shortly after. Glad to see these two getting honored. At 15 and 16, they were willing to put themselves in danger to save complete strangers. I would say that’s incredibly admirable and incredibly impressive.
