Several olympic athletes have complained about conditions surrounding their Covid-19 isolation in Beijing, with failures including unhygienic and small rooms, near inedible food, and a general confusion surrounding the entire process. Russian Biathlete Valeria Vastnetsova posted a picture of what she’d been served for several days in a row, food which appears to be quite heavily inedible, on her Instagram which has sense been made private. According to her, she had only eaten the pasta, causing her to lose a large amount of weight
“My stomach hurts, I’m very pale and I have huge black circles around my eyes. I want all this to end. I cry every day. I’m very tired.” – Valeria Vastnetsova
Polish speed skater Natalia Maliszewka and head of the German delegation Dirk Schimmelpfennig both corroborated the claims surrounding the food, and all three exclaimed distaste surrounding the lack of training equipment and poor Covid-19 testing schedules. Complaints of no internet being provided to the athletes have also come up, leaving them even closer to being completely isolated form the world.
Belgian Kim Meylemans, who tested positive and was sent into isolation after her arrival to Beijing, shared her story on her Instagram, telling of severe confusions that left her in tears. It appears, however, that as complaints are made, situations have been resolved on a case to case basis.
