Five people have died in an avalanche in Austria near the border to Switzerland on Friday, February 5th, and a sixth person was injured in the incident, which occurred in the state of Tyrol in the Spiss municipality. One person was killed and four were injured in an avalanche in western Austria on Saturday, February 5th, and two other Austrians were killed in another incident. These are three of more than 50 avalanches reported in the region in the past 48 hours as heavy snowfall hits the state, and according to Euronews, thirteen snow slides occurred on Friday alone.

About 20 people have reportedly died in avalanches in Austria in recent years, though the Coronavirus pandemic has reduced the number of skiers around the country, and thus caused a decrease in avalanche injuries and deaths.
