It turns out that getting 100+” of snow in a week can really wreak havoc on an area’s resources. Who would have thought.
Tahoe locals are experiencing shortages of food, gasoline, and other resources due to the monster snow storm that blocked commercial travel for days on end. Couple that with the influx of tourists flooding into the area for holiday travel, and Tahoe is in borderline crisis mode.
Highway I-80 has finally reopened, but traffic getting in and out of Tahoe is still backed up. It took some tourists 18 hours to make it back home to cities like San Francisco and Sacramento.
Officials are now asking that all non-essential travelers avoid the Sierras and Lake Tahoe regions to allow the area to be restocked with the resources needed.
Traveling to Tahoe to ski all of that glorious snow might be enticing at the moment, but you should probably stay home. Let the region regroup, restock, and refuel before you add even more of a burden to dwindling supplies.
