“It swam away very strong and healthy. And I’m sure one day down the road, they will see that fish again at some point. Sturgeon are very resilient, right? They survived three ice ages and they’re very hardy fish.” –Kevin Estrada, FVAGA director
Tip of the cap to the good folks over at The Fraser Valley Angling Guides Association (FVAGA) who helped a flood-stranded sturgeon back into the main stem of the Fraser River after the massive fish got stranded by a flood.
The CBC reports the sturgeon was discovered by a helicopter crew flying near British Columbia’s Herrling Island. A video of the fish struggling in an isolated and shallow pool left behind by receding floodwaters from recent catastrophic rains in B.C.was relayed to FVAGA who dispatched two professional sturgeon guides to the scene.
Tyler Buck and Jay Gibson wrangled the 6.5 foot 220lbs sturgeon into stretcher and hoofed it 2km to release its release point. The fish was in good condition when it was released. Not the catch and release these kind Canucks are used to but one they will surely never forget.
