On Wednesday, September 29, a young black bear attacked a couple near the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville, NC. According to the Smoky Mountain News, the couple had been picnicking with their dog which was described as a shepherd. The unleashed dog saw the black bear and quickly approached it barking. The bear, apparently aggravated by the dog, attacked the couple.

The woman and dog ran to the car while the man tried to fight the bear off. The man suffered bite and scratch marks on his hands and arms and a dislocated shoulder. The woman also suffered scratch marks. The dog was unharmed. Upon returning to their vehicle, the bear got on top of the car to continue the attack. Despite the growth in the black bear population in the area, attacks are extremely rare. This is the first reported attack in 25-years.

Officials have been attempting to locate and euthanize the bear in question. According to reports, the bear had not been located. The trails in the area had been closed to ensure the safety of trail users while the bear is at large. Fortunately for the young bear, it has managed to evade authorities thus far.
