It is October and Red Bull Rampage is coming up. Soon enough, the most talented freeriders in the world will be sending it huge in Utah. Indeed, freeride mountain biking takes many forms from the loamy and slippery rock rolls of the Pacific Northwest to huge exposed lines in the desert.

In the early 2000s, there was a fantastic offshoot of the freeride category…urban freeriding. These folks were sending it huge on city streets finding gaps and using stairs as transitions. Some riders used an aggressive hardtail frame with a burly dual crown downhill fork. Others used a full-on downhill bike. The consequences were high, the impacts were brutal and the crashes were insane.
