The Porkies, a powder-haven for skiers in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula will be closed this weekend: 1/8/-1/11. The ski area only operates Fridays-Sundays.

The ski area’s website doesn’t provide much information on the reason for closing. Only this brief statement that was posted today:

“DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES WE WILL BE CLOSED THE WEEKEND OF JANUARY 8- JANUARY 11

THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE

WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THE FOLLOWING WEEKEND”

However, a local news agency is reporting that The Porkies must remain closed until its triple chairlift is inspected by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

Seems pretty curious to me… Was there a lapse in the annual inspection of the chairlift, or did something happen that warranted an immediate inspection? Also, does an inspection of one chairlift really take 3+ days?

The Porkies are planning to reopen the following weekend, 1/15-1/17.
