Nice little video providing a quick download of info from Alta ski patrol about their use of the 105mm WWII Howitzer Cannon. If you’ve skied Alta on a pow day you no doubt know the sound of the heavy artillery, so here’s some factoids you rattle off to your ski buds next time they start flying:
“Snowbird and UDOT monitor 165 target points on 33 avalanche slide paths above a road that is bumper to bumper on weekends and powder days. So UDOT lobbied the Utah state government for approximately $375,000 to purchase a 105mm Howitzer and build an artillery “bunker”. They now have two of these WWII cannons in the bunker. Utah is the only state in the nation that uses military artillery to fire over inhabited areas.”
