First Descent Adventures Down Mt. Cook/Aoraki In New Zealand

“Myself and Ross Hewitt made a first descent on the skiers left side of the Caroline Face of Mount Cook / Aoraki. We climbed to a flat spot on the east ridge and dropped in, onsight to ski this 650m face in pretty good snow!”

Very cool chronicle of a first descent down left side of the Caroline Face of Mount Cook by mountain guides Dave Searle and Ross Hewitt.  The unbridled joy in these two professional mountain guides voices when they meet up at the bottom just made my day.

“After a few stormy days stuck in the Plateau hut we managed to get out and ski a (we suspect) new 700m line on the lookers right side of the Caroline face of Aoraki / Mt Cook. Pretty ideal conditions with cold wind buffed powder provided a very powerful experience, especially as we top downed the line having climbed the backside of the east ridge to get to the top of the face. Primed for a 2nd descent.”

(1) Sun rise just over the bergshrund on the way up the East face of Mount cook. (2) The elegant east face takes the obvious line up the wide snow slopes to the summit of #Aoraki /#mountcook. Knee to thigh deep trail breaking made the climb up the 1200m face pretty tough going. Especially with only two pairs of legs to put the track in. The light whilst skiing was a little flat due to some pesky high clouds but our descent was still ultra good with cold stuffy powder that begged you to go as fast as you felt comfortable. The day after this modern classic saw 14 people climb and ski the line in equally as magical conditions. Big Friday I called it. It meant the amount of descents this face has had has gone up to around 40-45. If it’s not on your “to do list” as a ski mountaineer then it should be… @salomonfreeski #timetoplay #skiing #mountains #skimountaineering #climb #newzealand #newzealandskiing #ski #freeride #gopro #salomon #mountainguide #ifmga #nutrition #fitness
