German Skier Loses $46K & Medal Stripped For Using Oxygen Between Giant Slalom Runs

German skier Stefan Luitz has been disqualified from his first World Cup win and will lose his prize money of 45,000 Swiss francs ($46,000) after it was discovered he was inhaling from an oxygen tank between giant slalom runs during December 2nd competition in Beaver Creek, Colorado.

WVSN reports The International Ski Federation (FIS) prohibits using supplemental oxygen even though the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) does not. Luitz will not be banned. FIS stated its hearing panel’s decision is:

“Not a sanction, but a consequence of the rule violation.”

Luitz and Germany’s ski federation has the opportunity appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. No word if they will seek appeal.
