Unless there’s some secret indoor ski facility we’re unaware of, The Chinese are about to have the biggest in the world. Wintastar Shanghai, will cover nearly 1 million square feet of land. The current title holder, Harbin Wanda Indoor Ski and Winter Sports Resort in Harbin, China, stands at 869 thousand square feet.

The Chinese government is trying to encourage citizens to ski leading up to the 2022 winter olympic games which the nation will be hosting. According to a 2017 CNN report, only 12.1 million Chinese people have tried skiing at least once, which is less than 1 percent of the population.

Officials are encouraging businesses to open ice rinks and ski resorts with the goal of having 300 million citizens playing winter sports by 2025. According to the Wintastar Shanghai website, the new indoor arena will host “three ski slopes of varying gradients including a slope of Olympics standard for training; ski runs, and over 25 snow play attractions for non-skiers.”
