An August storm brought heavy snowfall to the Alps. The snow began to fly on Saturday with more expected to fall into Monday morning.

The bulk of the snowfall came down in Austria and Italy, which is great news for the glacier resorts that are open or are due to open in the coming weeks. On the Kitzsteinhorn glacier above Kaprun, some reports claim that as much as 50cm fell overnight.

The higher elevations saw the most snow but unseasonably cold temperatures brought snow to lower altitudes as well. In some parts of the Italian Dolomites, snow fell as low as 1,200 metres.
