Lest you think global warming was invented by Al Gore in the early aughts, or even a decade later by Chinese fraudsters, a newspaper article published 106 years ago this week is being widely circulated for its impressive foresight on the dangers of carbon emissions.

The article from a newspaper in New Zealand, which appears below, has been verified by the online fact-checking websites Snopes as “authentic and consistent with the history of climate science.”

It’s an incredibly easy to understand explanation of the phenomenon currently causing our planet to warm, especially considering the time period in which it was written. Still, that’s no guarantee it won’t go over the head of James Inhofe, the senior member of the U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, because…well, snow.  

Nevertheless, it’s heartening to know that smart, sensible people have been a mainstay on this planet since at least 112 years ago. Maybe there are enough of us left to make a difference…
