ABOUT RECON CAMPERS:

Over 20 years ago, unknowing to me, was the beginning of Recon Campers, and a whole new life. After graduating with a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering, I built a 1986 Subaru Loyal into a small home, packed all my toys, mountain bike, road bike, windsurfers, snowboard, surfboard, rock and ice climbing gear, all my clothes, and headed to Lake Isabella, CA to windsurf for a few weeks.

14 months later I was still living in that car, having traveled from coast to coast twice; I was hooked for life.

I built my first VW camper from the ground up and  spent the next 4 years living in my van while windsurfing competitively, and traveling everywhere. Along the way I started working as an engineering consultant to the automotive industry working on either troubleshooting, assembly line, process issues, or getting new technologies from the lab into mass production.

All the beautiful places I have seen, all the amazing friends and people I met, all the trips from Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean I made, 17 trips to date, have made me certain that vanlife will always be a huge part of my life.

This was the place where my wanderlust began, and honestly where my adult life really began. I am so thankful for everyone I have met along the way. All of you helped shape my life that eventually lead me to create Recon Campers; so the average North American can afford and share in the dreams and adventures I was so lucky to have for so many years.

Sincerely,

Stephen Schank
