During a descent off Mt Adams in Washington’s Cascade Mountains on Sunday, a skier discovered the remains of a dead mountaineer. Search and rescue personnel have since mounted a successful recovery effort and the body is now off the mountain.

According to the Yakima Herald, the deceased person is 28 year-old Oregon native Alexander Edward. The victim appears to have been mountaineering in the area when he fell from an elevation of 11k feet. Edward was found some 2,500 vertical feet below the fall on Sunday.

While the skier was descending the glacier below Mt Adams, he caught sight of something red in the snow. Ultimately he’d discover the body and ski down to alert authorities. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

*Our deepest condolences go out to the victim’s friends and family.
