When it comes to downhill events, the Olympics might not be the same as Kitzbuhel but they’re damn close– as in close by .12 seconds. After putting down a near flawless run down,  35 year-old Askel Lund Svindal edged out the competition to win gold over his fellow teammate, Kjetil Jansrud.

What’s most impressive about Svindal’s victory is his ability to successfully rehab following numerous injuries.  He’s sustained knee injuries the past two years and told reporters that he’d been forced to sit out of competition during the pivotal month of February for what amounted to four whole seasons.

It’s the first time the Norwegians have ever won gold in the downhill.

Ultimately the close to middle aged man showed off his 4-medal olympic pedigree and took gold– possibly for the last time.

*Congratulations to Askel Lund Svindal on a fantastic race!
