During the 2012-13 winter, The Weather Channel started naming winter storms. Since then the winter storm identifier has kind of taken off. Earlier today, weather.com released their list of the 2017-18 winter storm names.

“It’s simply easier to communicate about a complex storm if it has a name, which our naming program has demonstrated.” said Bryan Norcross, senior hurricane specialist at The Weather Channel.
