While the idea of crowdfunding a ski area is nothing new, Red Mountain Resort was the first to create a viable business plan that utilized the e-commerce strategy. Since Red released its “Fight The man, Own The Mountain” campaign, many resorts– and more accurately its skiers are now looking to crowdfund their local ski spots in order to stay independent and well-funded into the future. Such is the case with Mt Rose reports the Tahoe Daily Tribune.

Earlier this year, resort officials sent an email to Mt Rose Ski Tahoe season pass holders telling them that its owner, Fritz Buser was looking to sell the Nevada-based ski area and almost immediately, comment sections lit up up like pinball machines with assertions ranging from, “Watch out… here comes Vail” all the way to, “the end of good ski areas in Tahoe is near…” Apparently that same sentiment touched Reno resident, Govind Davis. Davis, who started oneReno, is birthing a crowdfunding movement with hopes to buy the ski area.
“The oneReno Mt. Rose Fund intends to BUY the Mt. Rose Ski Resort and KEEP MT. ROSE LOCAL. We are setting up a Crowd Funding account so that anyone and everyone from the local communities around the lake can participate.”– oneReno Facebook Page
In just a month’s time, oneReno’s Facebook page garnered 1,000+ followers and continues to grow each day. However, the crowdfunding avenue is only sustainable if other, bigger financiers get involved. As of now, the plan is to generate close to $15 million in crowdfunding capital in order to generate interest amongst a separate financial institution or equity group.

However, this particular crowdfunding movement has yet to set up an actual website or portal for accepting funds. Before that happens, oneReno will have to find someone with ski resort managerial experience in order to gain credibility amongst investors and the ski industry as a whole.
