We have all been tempted, some of us have done it, but for one Heavenly skier ducking the boundary rope at the resort led to a criminal citation. According to an article on firsttracksonline.com,  South Lake Tahoe resident Nicholas Bridges, 28, decided to duck an out of bounds rope at Heavenly Resort and ended up busted after his friends called the authorities after he was out of communications for over 2 hours. The Search and Rescue unit conducted a search for the lost skier but it was called off after Bridges made a call to let them know his location. They eventually found him unharmed but the skier was cited for the skiing out of bounds. No report if there are any monetary repercussions or if his wrist was slapped.

Okay so we are all probably guilty of ducking a rope a two during our ski careers, most of the time ducking right back inbounds after an illegal pow slash or 10 but let this be a lesson to you that on top of the inherit dangers of skiing unpatrolled terrain, you can also get in trouble with johnny law over such maneuvers. It should also be noted that Bridges did not abide by the buddy system. ALWAYS SKI WITH A BUDDY!  So, please respect the mountain and know that if you break the rules, consequences come in all different shapes and sizes.

HERE IS THE LAW ON THE BOOKS:

Douglas County Code 9.08.030, “Skier Duties: 11. A skier, having used a ski lift or surface lift of a ski area, must not ski under a manmade barrier that is designed to prohibit a skier from entering a closed portion of the ski area or from leaving any part of the ski area. For the purpose of this section, a barrier may be designated by roping off an area. Any skier that violates this subsection is guilty of a misdemeanor. The bail for this violation is $640.00.”
