Alpenglow Sports is proud to announce the third installment of the 2014/15 Winter Film Series, presented by KTKE 101.5 and Blue Moon Brewing Company. On Thursday, January 15th, 2014 Mike Libecki, rock climber of international fame and a National Geographic nominee for “Adventurer of the Year,” continues the series at Squaw Valley’s world-famous Olympic Village Lodge.
Now in it’s 9th year, the Alpenglow Sports Winter Film Series has become a staple seasonal event for North Tahoe’s skiing and climbing community. Designed to inspire, motivate and educate, the event runs from November through March and showcases five famous athletes. All shows are free and raffle prizes from sponsors are sold to raise funds for local non-profit organizations. Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue is the beneficiary for Mike the show on January 15th.
“Mike Libecki’s is well known for seeking out rock climbing adventures in the last truly wild places on the planet,” according to Alpenglow Sports owner Brendan Madigan. “He is well known for his big wall climbing skills but perhaps more important for the Winter Film Series is the ability to weave these tales into an extremely comedic presentation.”
Libecki’s “Global Climbing Pursuits” will document his most recent adventures in his quest to complete 100 total expeditions throughout the world. These include a winter expedition to Siberia, big wall first ascents in subzero Greenland and Baffin Island, an Antarctica ski trip with his 11-year-old daughter, and rock climbing remote Polynesian jungle towers.
“The main components of my trips are remote, untouched, unexplored mystery,” says Libecki, who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah. “An adventure for me can’t be an adventure unless there is mystery, unless there is an unknown, something that hasn’t been done before.”
A Libecki trip is unique and dangerous, and his excursions to the remote edges of the world also come with a touch of whimsy. In addition to adventure, his stories are filled with joy – he will enthusiastically tell you about the time he stripped nude on top of a summit or digging larva from his flesh after being impregnated by strange flies in the Papua New Guinea jungle.
Amazing raffle prizes from generous sponsors Mountain Hardwear, Suunto, Clif Bar, Sterling Ropes, Black Diamond, Five Ten, and Goal Zero will be on hand with 100% of proceeds to benefit Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue.
Please come early for drink specials and good seating. The show begins at 7pm. Please call Alpenglow Sports at 530.583.6917 with questions.
