A father and daughter who were on a ski trip to Whistler are dead after a large boulder fell on their tent as they slept. The 49-year-old North Vancouver father had set camp with his 10-year-old daughter for an overnight camping trip on Blackcomb Mountain.

They had pitched their tent at the bottom of a rock face near the top of the mountain just below the ridgeline of Blackcomb Glacier.

The terrain is inside Whistler Blackcomb resort’s recreation area, but it was outside of normal ski area boundaries, said police.

“You get that kind of situation this time of year with warmer temperatures,” he said. It is triggered by a cycle called ice jacking, when the repeated freezing and thawing of water between rocks can cause weakening of the structures.
Police said the family has been notified. No names were released.
