The Alyeska aerial tramway has partially reopened following an accident on New Years Eve (Alyeska Tram Accident Far Worse Than First Reported). The accident left one of the of the two cabins so badly damaged that repairs to it will not be undertaken until the end of the season. As a result, only one of the cabins will be open for the remained of the season. A steel utility cabin weighing 8,000 lbs. will be used to counterbalancing the one good cabin. This will slow uphill capacity to just four uphill passenger trips per hour.
Alyeska plans on closing for the season on Apr. 28 almost a full month earlier than they typical close.
