I just logged 12 days of powder ( Over 100 inches) in the West and completed the chase by touring from Little Cottonwood Canyon near Alta to Big Cottonwood near Solitude on my Splitboard today (Thanks Arash, Blake and Dave). Snow is in the forecast for New England, The San Juan’s and in the long range snow returns to the NW and Northern Rockies. Keep reading if you look forward to high pressure ending in the West by week #2.

Synopsis (Powder Alerts). Currently snow is continuing to fall across southern New England from Rutland Vermont to Central Maine (Sunday River, Wildcat, Suglarloaf, Gunstock, and Killington). Expect the highest amounts along a line from North Conway to Northern and Central Maine (5-10). Northern New Mexico and the Southern San Juan’s of Colorado will see moderate snow begin late Sunday and continue through Monday PM. I expect amounts near Wolf Creek, Silverton and Taos to be in the 7-11 inch range by late Monday. Crested Butte might see 4-8 where areas to the north might only see 2-5 by Monday night (Front Range, Summit). Not a big storm but might worth the chase for Monday if you live near the San Juan’s.

HIGH PRESSURE IN THE WEST WILL EVENTUALLY GIVE WAY TO MORE SNOW BY JANUARY 8TH:

Other than a small system moving into the Northwest next weekend high pressure has a firm grip on most of the West until January 8th. A series of storms will roll into the Pacific Northwest, northern Idaho, Interior BC,(January 8-11) and eventually work into the Sierra by January 12th. The models push moisture into the Wasatch of Utah, Wyoming, and Colorado by the 13th. The East Coast also may remain in a cold and dry pattern for a few weeks with more snow towards the middle of the month.

THE CHASE

Sunday: Sunday River, Wildcat, Sugarloaf USA

Monday: Wolf Creek, Silverton, Durango, Crested Butte – Wildcard

Have a Happy New Year and hope you catch powder!
