If you like to hit big gap jumps or if you have been paying attention to freeskiing for more than just the last few years you have definitely heard of Pyramid Gap. Located a short hike from Alta up the famed Grizzly Gulch Pyramid Gap sends skiers up and over a large gully to a fantastic landing on top of an old mine tailings pile. Sage Cattabriga- Alosa made his breakthrough move on Pyramid way back in about 2000 by tossing a casually double front mute grab over it. Many young skiers wanting to make a name for themselves have stepped up to this beast and I am ashamed to say that I am not one of them.

Alta Liftie extrodinare Jarrett Smith took his chance with Pyramid last season and made it through ok. Maybe more of us should give it a go next year. Who is into it?

Jarrett’s Words:

Probably the scariest thing I’ve ever done on skis. Kind of puts into perspective how gnarly some of the stuff you see in movies is, at least for me it did. I hit it a few more times with friends (also lifties) Connor Jackson and Ben Poirer. Both cleared the gap as well but on Ben’s 3rd hit he ate shit on the inrun bad enough to sprain his ankle and put him out for the rest of the season. That’s just how sketchy trying to hit Pyramid or Chad’s gap is.
