Unofficial Beer | Are You A Beer Geek?

By

Capping off the 2012 Boston Beer Week  was the American Craft Beer Festival held at Boston’s World Trade Center this past Friday night and Saturday.  Nearly 15,000 people bought tickets this year to help celebrate the 5th anniversary of Beer Advocate’s largest and most anticipated event.

I think most people who read these posts are familiar with beer geeks.  They come in all shapes and sizes but beer geeks are generally perceived by the public as fat, nerdy men with beards who scoff at domestic macro beers and have terrible B.O.  Although there’s much truth to that description my queries have led me to believe that’s not really the case.

I took a break from pouring during the first session on Saturday and asked some people what they thought.  Here’s what a few had to say:

Name: Chuck
From : Mansfield, MA
Favorite Beer: Harpoon IPA
What defines a beer geek?: “Somebody who won’t drink a Bud-type beer”
Quote of the weekend?: “In dog beers I’ve only had one!”

Names: Dave, Brock, Kent, and Nick
From: Clinton, MA, Tyngesboro, MA, Grafton, MA, Boston, MA
Favorite Beer: Bass, Guinness, Ommegang Witte, Harpon IPA
What defines a beer geek?: “Being here and constantly trying something new.”
Quote of the weekend?: “Get your beer on!”

Names: Ameena, Jess, Ashley
From: Boston, MA
Favorite Beer: Cody’s Honey Ginger, Sea Dog Blueberry, Opa Opa Watermelon Ale
What defines a beer geek?: “Getting a great buzz and party rockin'”
Quote of the weekend?: “Party and bullshit!”

Name: Kurt
From: Boston
Favorite Beer: Oak Aged Arrogant Bastard
What defines a beer geek?: “Somebody who just…who just…expects that much more as a beer drinker”
Quote of the weekend?: “Hail to the East!”

Names: Meg, Ann
From: Boston, MA
Favorite Beer: Opa Opa Watermelon Ale
What defines a beer geek?: “It’s a passion, a way of life…it’s fun, it’s social.”
Quote of the weekend?: “Sorry I’m not sorry you weren’t here.”

So are you a beer geek?

Cheers!
