X games coming to Whistler

In 2013 (assuming the world hasn’t ended) the X Games will expand into six action sports competitions around the world. Global X is looking for the final three locations to join the existing venues  Los Angeles,  Aspen, CO., and Tignes, France. Whistler is in the hunt to be one of these new winter locations.

Should Whistler win the bid then X Games would make it’s Canadian debut as early as April of next year. This is very exciting in a town that has been searching for high profile events to fill the void left by the Olympics in 2010. The only opposition against bringing Global X to Whistler seems to ground itself in the fact that the Telus World Ski and Snowboard Festival occurs during the same time as the proposed Global X competition. The Telus Festival is already Whistler’s own X Games-type event and many revere it as the foremost extreme awesome-fest/party of the year. Would X Games during the same time dilute this feeling or could the events combine to one super-fest?

Global X in Whistler

Whistler officials have agreed to combine the events if Global X is in fact held here. The alternative of course, is the Telus Festival competing against X Games at another location for the same athletes and exposure. This would be bad for both business and the progressing level of radness at the two competitions. I say bring Global X to Whistler and only good things are sure to come. After all, X Games is the pinnacle of extreme events.

ESPN should announce the finalist locations at the end of January, and the ‘winner’ will be revealed in April.
